    ReplyDelete
  48. Hey Bane, I need a suggestion, what do you think -- which of the two is more feasible-- GRE Paper-Based test or GRE Computer-Based test? And why? (on the basis of the revised GRE Pattern).
    Reply Awaited.
    Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  49. They offer paper-based test only 3 times a year (so test date is fixed) and only in the areas where computer-based is not available (so you will have to look for it).

In computer-based test score will be given immediately for Quant and Verbal. Also there's section adaptive algorithm, so even if you don't do well, in the end your score is still decent. But from the other side why do you need a decent score? (unless your GRE requirement are not high)

Paper-based test is easier for you to manage (because you don't need to get used to computer, it's real pain for many people cause there're no applications that completely resemble the test except PowerPrep), but problems will be lil bit tougher than in computer-based (especially in quant).

I think with NEW GRE there's no big difference between paper- and computer-based tests. You can skip question and come back to it later in both cases. But still if you can choose, I would stay with computer-based, cause all the study guides are primarily oriented on this type of test. Unless the paper-based test date is very close or you need to go to another country to take it - then it's not worth :)

    Hope it helped.

P.S. I never took paper-based test, so all my thoughts on it are based on browsing internet and reading blogs, books and forums over past 3 years :)

P.P.S. I hope they do allow calculator in paper-based test - that I don't know...

    ReplyDelete
  50. The paper-based test is administered in Tehran, Iran, where I took the test recently. And yes, they provide every test taker with a calculator whose functions resemble those of the computer-based exam's on-screen calculator.

  79. I don't understand why these prospective graduate students are typing as if they're in middle school, and also demanding things from you. I somehow doubt they'd pass the analytical writing portion of the GRE. It's also very rude to speak to you as if you're obligated to provide them of everything they ask. You are, afterall, the one doing the favors for everyone else. What you've provided is already enough, and I thank you for that sincerely. I just wish everyone else would stop pestering you.

    1. You must score well in your GRE exam. Here are few tips which you can use. Your scores in the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is one of the chief gauges for getting admittance in graduate and business schools in English speaking countries. Here are key tips that you must consider while preparing for the GRE exam.

 Plan your schedule: It is important for you to prepare your schedule and the way in which you go about preparation. Various training institutes provide software packages and tools that provide awareness on the test-taking strategies, simulated tests on all areas and much needed insight on the parameters governing the way a GRE test is scored. In addition to your exam preparation, you have to include adequate sleeping hours during the prep days, so that you do not reach a zombie state bereft of sleep. Also, never put it too much of last hour cramming lest you might consider dozing off during the exam.

 Know you exam: The GRE test has 3 sections which have to be given equal weightage. You would really do well, if you are aware of the exam format and the interface. It makes sure that you do not get a shock of your life, the first time you attempts the GRE exam.

 Focus on your weak areas of study: GRE requires you to have impeccable quantitative skills, immaculate reasoning ability and polished writing skills, all of which does not come naturally to many. You have to identify the areas in which you are strong and those which require enhancement and specifically focus your preparation in that direction. You have to guard against laying more emphasis on the areas you are traditionally strong in, while neglecting other comparatively weaker areas of study. This invariably leads to a skewed level of preparation and below standard performance in the final exam.

 Practice simulated tests: Apart from getting a real life experience of taking a simulated GRE test, it also helps you budget your time, and to pace and strategize the way you should take the exam. You may have your own way of taking exam and should stick to it, but you should also apply small tricks of elimination, backward answer taking etc. that goes a long way in ensuring a strong performance.

 Be sure about the schools you are targeting: One of the most critical facets of your GRE preparation is zeroing in on the list of schools you are targeting. With nearly all graduate schools in the United States requiring a GRE score for admission, it becomes vital for you to know the minimum test scores those schools consider as their minimum cut offs. That way, you can streamline your preparation on various specific areas and identify beforehand what exactly you need.

You have to realize that a relatively high or an above average GRE score might not promise acceptance to a college but a below par score would undeniably guarantee elimination from most schools. Hence in addition to a great academic record and a good GRE score you have to have a holistic approach to your student life apart from the academic front, which includes involvement in extracurricular and sport related activities. Apart from that, letters of recommendations from your seniors or supervisors in your previous workplace or educational institution or even from renowned professionals play a huge role in balancing the selection in your favour.
You must do well to prepare a detailed personal statement that features amongst the application documents. This is an important document which introduces you and says a lot about your passion for the field of study, goals and your ability to meet them. There are many online resources which helps you prepare for the GRE exam and one of them is Gradestack GRE mobile app available on Google Play store.
